1. What Are Chaleturi?
Chaleturi, traditionally mountain chalets, are quaint wooden houses often located in alpine regions. The term originates from Switzerland, where these cozy structures served as seasonal shelters for shepherds, but it has become popular across many mountain regions, including Romania’s Carpathians. Typically, chaleturi have a rustic, warm, and homely atmosphere designed to blend in with the surrounding natural landscape.
Chaleturi are generally made of timber and stone, featuring sloping roofs, large windows, and balconies that provide breathtaking views of the mountains or forests. These buildings are known for their simplicity, coziness, and ability to provide warmth during the cold winter months.
2. A Brief History of Chaleturi
The concept of chaleturi can be traced back to alpine areas in Europe, especially in Switzerland and France. Originally, they were used by farmers and shepherds who needed temporary housing during the summer months while tending their animals. Over time, as tourism developed in mountainous areas, the charm and appeal of these humble structures led to their transformation into luxurious vacation homes and lodgings.
In Romania, the concept of chaleturi gained popularity in the 20th century as mountain resorts like Sinaia and Poiana Brașov started attracting more visitors. Many traditional chaleturi designs reflect the architecture of Romania’s mountain villages, offering a harmonious blend of local tradition and alpine influence.

Chaleturi have distinctive architectural features that make them stand out:
- Natural Materials: Chaleturi are typically built using wood, stone, and other natural materials that complement the surrounding environment.

- Large Windows and Balconies: Designed to offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape, chaleturi often feature large windows that allow plenty of natural light inside.
- Open Fireplaces and Wood Stoves: For warmth and comfort, many chaleturi have a central fireplace or wood stove, adding to their rustic charm.
